First Full Day of School

20 Aug

Today was Moco’s first full day of school.  She described her day in one word, and only one word: “Good.”  On the Moco Scale of Understatements, that means “I had a really great and fun day.  I spent all of recess swinging on the monkey bars and during lunch I laughed at one of the boys who put the end of my powdered drink mix-in into his chocolate milk.  I really like my teacher and my new puppy Friday take-home folder and my new shoes.  What are we having for supper?”  Perhaps I should provide a Moconish to English dictionary?  (Or should it be Moconese?  Memphish?  Mocokaans?  Suggestions?)

The kids crashed hard tonight, and I don’t blame them.  If it weren’t for my nervous energy and the endless to do list that runs through my head, I would crash at 8:30 too.  However, I don’t look quite as cute and peaceful as these two while sleeping:

Moco and Bubba and their random assortment of blanket, a giant princess comforter, Boo, Mr. Bear (as Moco’s pillow) and other stuffed animals.  And apparently a little pad of paper.

This actually happened a while ago (well before I started this blog), but I was thinking about it this morning, and it made me laugh all over again.

Note: Bubba has this thing with his mouth – he looks like he’s sucking on a bottle or pacifier, but without the bottle or pacifier. He has done this since birth. He does it when he’s tired; it’s a self-soothing mechanism. Usually he does this while twisting Boo’s fringe and sticking it in-between his fingers or toes or putting it up his nose or in the corner of his eye. I know, I know… my kid’s weird. But if he’s calm and quiet, it’s not that big of a deal. When his college roommate complains, we’ll have a little heart-to-heart.

Anyhow, I found a picture that documents this quirk:

Back to the story: Earlier this summer, I was out of the house, and Daddy put the kids to bed. He was watching television when he heard a car alarm go off. Then stop. Then go off again. Then stop. This apparently went on for at least ten minutes, and it was really starting to annoy him. He figured it was probably keeping the kids up as well, so he went to check on them.

Moco was fast asleep in her room. Bubba, however, was propped up on a pillow, cuddled in one corner of his bed, content as can be, doing his mouth thing, with Boo by his side, and tapping a nice little tune with his fingers. On the keyless entry remote to my CR-V.

Daddy wanted to be mad, but I think he had a hard time keeping a straight face while confiscating the remote. How can you stay mad at this kid?

The things kids say and do… at the Iowa Children’s Museum

18 Aug

The kids and I had a great weekend.  Saturday morning, Moco painted pottery at a local paint-your-own-pottery shop that co-sponsors a story hour with the parks & recreation department.  This weekend’s story was Fancy Nancy, and I’ll post pictures of her pottery as soon as we get it back.

After pottery class, we headed out to Iowa to stay with Daddy’s older sister (Auntie Therie) and also get to visit with my college friend Kirsti and her family (husband Reed and daughter Skylar).  It was a quick trip, but we had fun hanging out and doing fun things.

Moco and Bubba (and Skylar, too!) loooooooooooooved the Children’s Museum, which is very conveniently located at the Coral Ridge Mall, near the food court and an indoor ice skating rink.  Moco loved the art room, puppet theater, grocery store and hospital.  Bubba loved the ball room (with its loop-the-loop ramp for golf balls) and the ambulance (which he affectionately referred to as the “fire tuck!”).

Bubba kept insisting that we return to the ambulance so he could “drive” around.  He loved spinning the steering wheel, pushing buttons, and hearing the siren.  Then he got really excited and pointed at the dashboard and yelled “ME GOT COCK!”

WHAT?!?!  I looked to see that he was pointing at the dials on the pretend dashboard, which look like just like CLOCKS.  We are definitely going to have to work on Bubba’s pronunciation…

Graysonese

13 Aug

In case you ever find yourself hanging out with Bubba, you might need to refer to this handy-dandy Graysonese-to-English mini-dictionary:

appa dippahs = apple dippers (example: “We go McDono’s an’ hab appa dippahs?”)

ayot = a lot (example: “I pee. Ayot.”)

backoom camer = vacuum cleaner (he has his own little Hoover)

dat = that

Doc-toh Mosshow = Dr. Marshall (who isn’t even our pediatrician)

dah-yers = dollars (example: “I got two dah-yers!”)

eye coob = ice cube

geen = green (his favorite color)

hab = had

hanitizer = hand sanitizer

hoffee = hot coffee

Mempiss = Memphis

pay = spray (example: “I gonna pay you wit da hose, ok?”)

puss = purse (this is exactly why you need this translation)

pewter = computer

Shebby = Sherry (one of his two babysitters)

E-yay-go-go = Diego

yallet = wallet

yemonade = lemonade

Yewie = Louie the lab, his “cousin”

yike = like (example: “I yike it!”)

yittle = little (example: “I wan’ a yittle bit a dat!”)

I will update this translation occasionally so you don’t find yourself saying “What? Did he just say ‘puss’? That Daddy sure is teaching them a lot of foul language.” Heh.
